As the war with Ukraine continues, different ideas emerge of what victory should look like. This isn’t only with respect to Ukraine, either – for the Russian opposition community there’s just as active a conversation. For some, victory looks like a return to the pre-2022 status quo, where Kremlin interests are pursued without military violence. For others, victory looks like a change in power, with a hopefully more democratic government replacing the Putin regime. And then there are those who want a complete re-thinking of the Russian nation, which may involve breaking up the state into smaller countries and giving various regions/nationalities the right to govern themselves. Still other voices say that victory can only mean an immediate stop to the war, suggesting that Ukraine should give territory to Russia in order to end the invasion. This is not an exhaustive list of possibilities, all with their own advantages and disadvantages – which can lead to disagreement or even infighting among the opposition. What can dialogue between these different positions look like, and how can we prepare ourselves for the possible costs of victory over Putin?
