On June 20th, thousands of locals took to the streets in Tbilisi to protest in favour of Eurointegration. Rumours that Georgia’s application for candidate status was “sabotaged” were common for weeks. Many believe that moving towards Europe, and specifically the European Union, is the best future possible for the country – but others criticize the EU as another political institution capable of failing, or even exploiting, the less-powerful countries of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. Which leads to the question: in what ways can the idea of Europe assist post-Soviet countries like Georgia (or even Ukraine), and in what ways can it prove deceptive?
